Title : Interaction between age at menarche and genetic polymorphisms on traits of metabolic syndrome

¡¡

Abstract : Early menarche has been associated with increased risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Although MetS has a significant genetic component, limited evidence, to date, supports a common genetic background underlying an association of age of menarche and MetS. Therefore, we evaluated previous GWAS-identified genetic variants for interactions between specific SNPs and age at menarche. At first, we identified the risk of MetS incidence was significantly increased only at 12 ¡Â years of age at menarche. Women with early menarche (¡Â12 years) also had significantly higher levels of triglycerides and waist circumference. For gene-environment interaction, we identified 2 SNPs located on chromosome 2 (intergenic to the SCG2) were associated with triglycerides including the genetic interaction with age at menarche. These two SNPs were not associated with triglycerides in a main effect only model. These findings may help us understand the role of age at menarche on development of MetS, and gene-environment interactions that confer MetS susceptibility.
