Abstract

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) and often results in fatal pneumonia. Despite the worldwide effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, the underlying mechanisms of the fatal viral pneumonia remain elusive. In order to characterize the inflammatory features associated with the viral pneumonia in COVID-19 patients, clinical specimens, including bronchoalveolar lavage fluids (BALFs), sputa, lung biopsies, and bloods collected from confirmed cases of COVID-19 patients with varying degrees of disease severity were extensively analysed. In addition, we also examined and compared the viral dynamics and systemic immune responses observed in patients with COVID-19 and Middle Ease Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). Kinetic profiling of multiple inflammatory mediators showed complex dysregulation of innate and adaptive immune responses, which also associated with differential pulmonary inflammation in COVID-19 and MERS. In this presentation, I will also present and discuss evolutionary pathways of the emerging coronavirus infections, COVID-19 and MERS, which often resulting in fatal pneumonia.
